Compact or full-size keyboard
The question is not size
It is the distance between your two hands. On a full-size board, the number pad pushes the mouse to the right, and your right shoulder spends the whole day in external rotation. That is why compact layouts took hold among people who sit at a screen for eight hours, long before they became a matter of taste.
The one-week test
Put a strip of tape over your number pad and work for a week without touching it. If you tear it off after two days, you have your answer and it cost nothing.
Most people find they used it three times a day, and that a separate pad sitting to the left would serve just as well on the days they genuinely need one.
What a compact layout does not fix
It does not make typing pleasant. A mediocre compact keyboard stays mediocre, merely closer to the mouse. Key travel, noise and chassis rigidity are judged independently of layout, and they are what you notice after a month.
