The cable is not a step backwards
Wired headphones never run out of battery, never update themselves, and never drop the connection at the wrong moment. At a desk, those three absences are worth more than the freedom of movement you trade for them.
The complaint people make most often, the trailing cable, is solved by a detachable lead of honest length. The complaint nobody makes is that they do not wear out through the battery, which is to say through the one part you cannot replace.
What matters, in order
Comfort comes before sound, by a wide margin. Headphones you take off after an hour are useless, whatever their frequency response. Look at the weight, the pressure on your temples, and the material of the earpads, which is the part that wears out first and therefore has to be replaceable.
Isolation comes next. Closed over-ear cups shut out the office with no electronics at all; active noise cancelling does the same thing while drawing power, adding a faint hiss, and costing three times as much.
The test worth doing
Listen to a recording you know by heart, not a demonstration track. What you are looking for is not what the headphones add, but what they take away: a voice pushed back, cymbals that hiss, bass that swallows everything else.
Ten minutes is enough. If something bothers you after ten minutes, it will still bother you in six months.
